Like a crack addict who only comes back to see family when he’s out of cash and needs another fix, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is hitting up his old “friends” here in America for some quick coin. Just in case the president and Congress are otherwise occupied and don’t get to his letters, calls, and texts, he went on X just to make sure that you know.
In his post, the fun-sized tyrant said he sent letters to President Donald Trump and Congress. Zelensky reminds us that this is a rare occurrence for the “leader of another state to address both the President and Congress of the United States simultaneously with a letter.” How is that supposed to make us feel? I honestly can't tell.
Generously, he acknowledged that America and the world may be keeping a closer watch on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz than they are on Ukraine, but he wants you to know he’s still here, and he still wants your tax money.
But the war here in Europe must also be brought to an end – a very bloody war that is already in its fifth year at full scale. The sooner we are able to provide greater protection against ballistic threats, the sooner we will be able to make diplomacy work. As long as Russia continues to rely on missiles, its interest in diplomacy is not real. We must correct this. And we can do so only together with America. Ukraine is grateful to America for all its support. And Ukraine will be even more grateful for a dignified peace and guaranteed security. All of this is possible – if there is sufficient determination, Zelensky said.
This week, I prepared a special letter addressed to the President of the United States and to Congress. And yesterday, the letter was officially delivered to the institutions in Washington. One thing Zelensky has a talent for is not reading a room.
There’s a line in the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof where Lazar gives the beggar one kopek. The beggar says, “One kopek? Last week you gave me two kopeks.”
Lazar replies, “I had a bad week,” to which the beggar utters, “So if you had a bad week, why should I suffer?”
Kind of reminds me of Zelensky for some reason. How many times in the past year did Zelensky have America’s full attention with the hope that hostilities between Ukraine and Russia would come to an end? And how many times did Zelensky himself sabotage not only the peace talks themselves but the Trump administration's good faith efforts to try to bring an acceptable peace to the region?
I wouldn’t begin to try to describe what that acceptable peace would look like, so that’s not my point. It’s just that Zelensky does have a say in how things will end in his war with Russia, and as he should know by now, Trump shut the money spigot off last year.
Still, that isn’t stopping Zelensky from trying to get the American people to pressure Congress to pressure Trump to turn over some of those good old American greenbacks.
In another post on X, Zelensky was not finished. He shared a video of himself welcoming leftist U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), who gave up some of their valuable recess time by traveling to Europe. Looks like they're taking one for the team.
Did you ever notice how much more affable Zelensky is these days when he’s low on cash?
I briefed the congressmen on the frontline situation and on our successful long-range sanctions. Our partners clearly see that Russia is suffering enormous losses. It is important to prevent any weakening of sanctions against the Russian Federation – we discussed this as well. We are also working with the American side on concluding a Drone Deal. Particular attention was given to the negotiation process. There must be no pause in diplomacy, and talks must be reinvigorated. The whole world needs peace, Zelensky (or his social media staffer) wrote.
That’s all lip service, by the way. If he were really that serious, he’d be at the table and not schmoozing Democrats.
One thing he never really spends much time on when he requests billions of dollars from us is telling us what’s in it for us. He always skips that part and goes right to what’s in it for him. We’re to assume that what’s good for him has to be good for us on the basis that he did a meet-and-greet with a U.S. politician known largely for fibbing about his military record, inferring he served in Vietnam when he did not.
Today, American Members of Congress Richard Blumenthal @SenBlumenthal and Jim Himes @jahimes are in Kyiv. It is an important visit during these difficult days after a massive attack. We are grateful to the United States, to the President, Congress for their strong bipartisan… pic.twitter.com/HIZmqh5I0p

Do we ever really know where all that Ukraine money goes?
On the issue of Russia and Ukraine, should Russia own all of Ukraine? No. Was it wrong to invade Ukraine? Yes. But who created the circumstances for that invasion? The Biden administration.
Too many people - some on our side - expect the Trump administration to clean up that mess Biden left us and put things all back to the way they were during Trump’s first term. That’s unlikely to happen no matter how much you want it to happen. It's unlikely to happen, no matter how often you try to frame Americans as “pro-Putin,” if they suggest that it's time the two sides negotiate a compromise to end the conflict.
Until then, there is only one thing you can count on. Every now and then, Zelensky will reemerge in some shape or form, shamelessly asking for more of our money and weapons at our expense.
