The Marines May Have Found the Answer to Fighting a Drone War

How best to fight a war against drones? To date, the U.S. and most nations have been using expensive interceptors to shoot them down. 

One-way attack drones (such as the Iranian-designed Shahed-136 used in recent global conflicts) typically cost between $20,000 and $50,000 to produce. In contrast, air-defense interceptor missiles used to shoot them down—such as the U.S. Patriot, SM-2, or THAAD systems—cost between $1 million and $4 million per shot. The radar systems used to track those drones are even more expensive. The AN/TPY-2 radar that supports the THAAD system can cost upwards of $1 billion. 

This dynamic is known in military strategy as a severe cost asymmetry or the "cost-exchange problem." That asymmetry also works to drain our interceptor stockpiles to the point that we're running short. One option will be to denude our stockpiles in East Asia, leaving Taiwan open to attack by China. That's an option that Donald Trump and the Joint Chiefs don't want to exercise.

The Marines, always known as innovators because they usually have to make do with less, have come up with a unique solution to the interceptor crisis. The beauty of it is that it's smart, cheap, and already a weapon in the Corps' arsenal. 

The M240B medium machine gun can be mounted on a bipod, tripod, aircraft, or vehicle. It's "a belt-fed, air-cooled, gas-operated, fully automatic machine gun that fires from the open bolt position," reports Military.com. It's used by all four services and "is issued to infantry, armor, combat engineers, special force/rangers, and selected field artillery units that require medium support fires," says Military.com.

It's an extraordinarily lethal weapon that the Marines have upgraded by pairing the M240B with the Bullfrog autonomous weapon station. "The move pairs the AI-powered robotic mount with the M240 machine gun already familiar to Marines, giving the service’s most expeditionary counter-drone platform a kinetic option that can detect, track and engage Group 1 through Group 3 unmanned aircraft systems at a fraction of the cost of missile interceptors," according to Military.com

Bullfrog is not a new gun. It is a robotic weapon station that uses artificial intelligence, computer vision and precision robotics to transform legacy or modern firearms into systems capable of autonomous detection, tracking and engagement of aerial threats. The version selected for the Marine Corps is built around the M240 7.62mm machine gun.

According to specs provided to Military.com, the system relies on passive sensing rather than radar, which helps keep the host platform’s signature low. Pointing accuracy is listed at less than one minute of angle.

In the M240 configuration, the cyclic rate is 850 rounds per minute, and the company has repeatedly highlighted a cost per kill measured in the low tens of dollars, driven largely by the price of the ammunition itself.

For those concerned about runaway AI turning on our Marines, there are several safeguards built into the Bullfrog that prevent that.

Regarding autonomy concerns: Operators retain the final authority. The system can handle the detect-track-identify sequence and present firing solutions, but a human authorizes the engagement. That human-in-the-loop design keeps the capability inside existing rules of engagement while removing much of the cognitive load of manually tracking fast, small drones.

The Bullfrog will fit nicely into L-MADIS (Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System), the Corps' mobile counterdrone air defense system. It typically consists of a pair of ultra-light tactical vehicles (such as the Polaris MRZR all-terrain vehicles) that can be easily loaded onto aircraft to support small, widely scattered combat units.

In addition, L-MADIS has electronic warfare capabilities that allow it to detect, track, and jam hostile drones. When the E-warfare efforts fail, Bullfrog is there to clean up.

It sounds like the Bullfrog is a godsend for the Corps.

Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have driven home a simple arithmetic problem: low-cost commercial and military drones can force expensive interceptors or high-risk close-range engagements. A single Shahed-style one-way attack drone can cost tens of thousands of dollars or less. Traditional kinetic interceptors often cost hundreds of thousands to millions.

Bullfrog’s pitch is that a well-aimed burst of 7.62mm ammunition can solve the same problem for the price of the rounds. The system is already fielded or under contract with the Army, Navy, U.S. Special Operations Command maritime units, and allied forces including South Korea and the United Arab Emirates. It has also been validated through Joint Interagency Task Force 401 work.

Given the nature of war's rapid change, it's good to rely on the Marines to lead the way.
