Some Democrats definitely need an intervention. Or a straitjacket.
"A cohort of resistance-minded House Democrats is pushing their colleagues to begin building the case against President Trump now in anticipation of a Day 1 impeachment vote if they retake the House," reports Axios.
The Democrats' mad dog base of frothy-faced radicals can't wait to get Donald Trump in the dock. There are only two eensy, teensy problems: Democrats haven't won a darn thing yet, and they don't have a "high crime" or "misdemeanor" to realistically hang their impeachment on.
No worries. They'll find one.
"This is something that I keep saying to our leadership ... we need to have a very concrete, coordinated strategy," Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) told Axios. She said the party should "build up the case so that when we are in power in January, we've created the conditions ... we've done the fact-checking, we've done the shadow hearings, everything we need to be able to impeach [Trump]."
I would love to see these people's "fact-checking" operation. Sheesh.
The radicals' biggest obstacle would be the new speaker of the House, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). Jeffries would love to see Trump impeached, but not for a while. Democrats have a pile of IOUs, and passing a budget using the reconciliation process would replenish the coffers of many of their friends.
A Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll released Tuesday showed that 55% of Americans want Trump impeached. It's a nonsense poll because it's a highly partisan issue, and Trump will never be convicted, no matter who controls the Senate. Sixty-seven senators are never going to vote to convict Donald Trump, making this entire exercise a partisan witch hunt.
“We have a case – a very strong case – so we should really work on it now,” another House Democrat, Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), told Axios.
A case for what? This is how far the radical Democrats in the House have strayed from reality.
"That net +18 verdict," Strength In Numbers author G. Elliott Morris wrote, "puts Trump in the neighborhood of the numbers Richard Nixon saw at the peak of the Watergate scandal in August 1974."
Morris cited Axios' reporting that more than 85 House and Senate Democrats called for Trump to be impeached or removed via the 25th Amendment to the Constitution following his threat to destroy Iran's civilization earlier this month.
The big picture: In the immediate aftermath of the 2024 election, Democrats didn't even want to hear the word impeachment.
"People ridiculed me," said Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), who was the first Democrat to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump last year.
When Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) forced a vote on impeaching Trump last June, 128 Democrats voted with Republicans to quash the effort while just 78 voted to advance it.
No, Ms. Thanedar, people didn't ridicule you because you proposed impeaching Donald Trump less than six months after he took office. People ridiculed you because you're bat-guano crazy and a hysteric.
When Texas Democrat Al Green forced a vote on impeachment last June, 128 Democrats voted with Republicans to nix the effort while just 78 voted to advance it.
"When Green forced another vote to impeach Trump last December, his support went from 78 Democrats to 140," says Axios. Forty-seven other Democrats voted "present," including Minority Leader Jeffries and the rest of the Democratic House leadership.
This latest drive to impeach the president might actually work out well. Planning for this will-o'-the-wisp impeachment will distract Democrats while Trump and the Republicans do the real work of the nation.
