I always figure that I’m doing the Democrats a favor when I write about their socialism problem. Identifying the problem is the first step in fixing it, and if Democrats could fix their socialism problem, I think our government would be in much better hands. They’re not going to listen to me or anyone else on the right. I get that, but will they listen to someone on the left?
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is literally daring the party to listen before it's too late. So why won't anyone on the left take him seriously? I know Fetterman isn’t the party’s favorite Democrat these days, but he’s still a Democrat, and if his party doesn’t listen to him, he’ll have the last laugh.
And let’s be honest, this is bigger than just a small handful of policy differences. Fetterman has spent the past few weeks telling anyone who will listen that his party has a socialism problem, and he isn't being subtle about who he means. Fetterman has pointed directly at Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and the collapsed campaign of Graham Platner in Maine as proof the party is drifting somewhere it shouldn't.
And he’s not being subtle about it. He called El-Sayed and candidates like him "these garbage kinds of people," and said they're dragging the party down with them. "I don't care if he's a fellow Democrat," Fetterman said, explaining why he's willing to criticize a member of his own party in public.
He didn't stop with Michigan, either. Fetterman also singled out Maine Senate Democrat nominee Troy Jackson, Platner’s replacement, who has the backing of the Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and holds views strikingly similar to Platner's.

"Our party has a socialism problem," Fetterman said, driving the point home. "I'll be the one Democrat that calls it for what it is and not use the euphemism that it's a big-tent situation.” We’ve been mocking the “big tent” rhetoric from the Democrats too, and it’s refreshing to hear it called out as B.S. from the left.
And, of course, he brought up Hasan Piker.
"Democrats like El-Sayed are proud to campaign with garbage like Hasan Piker," Fetterman said, referencing the popular left-wing streamer who once claimed, "America deserved 9/11."
Obviously, now that Piker has become a liability for the Democrats, he’s trying to walk back his past comments, but we know what he really thinks.
It would be great if Democrats heeded Fetterman’s warnings, but they won’t. He may be one of them, but his approval ratings among Republicans are higher than they are among Democrats.
And that's the real problem.
Because Fetterman's approval rating within his own party is so low, the voters who most need to hear his warning are the least likely to listen to it. The Democrat Party may end up pushing him out by 2028. But he'll probably get the last laugh, because if Democrats don't get their socialism problem under control, they're going to have much bigger problems.
