Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) declared this week that she's done answering questions about Hasan Piker, right as Democrats scramble to put distance between themselves and far-left influence ahead of this year’s midterms. Dingell made her demand on Wednesday during a student town hall in Michigan, campaigning alongside Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.). She opened her remarks by directly calling out reporters for their focus on Piker.
"I am done, so don't any reporter ask me again about Hasan Piker," Dingell said. "It's not what November is about. Republicans are trying to make it. They're trying to divide us, and we got to stop letting them try to divide us."
Except Dingell wasn't actually done. Not even close.
Moments later, at the same town hall, she kept talking about him anyway. "I don't agree with Hasan Piker on a lot of stuff, and I really don't agree with him on some of the woman things he said," she said. "And I'm still trying to figure out, is it the reason he exercises and looks buff is why he has so many followers."
So much for not making November about him.
Dingell repeated the same criticism that same day on CNN's Situation Room, proving once again that she can't stop talking about the guy she claims doesn't matter. "I'm tired of people trying to drag me into it," she said. "I strongly disagree with many of the things that Hasan Piker has said, from Israel to, quite frankly, if you're a woman who has fought against sexual violence and domestic violence her whole life, what he has said about rape, etc., is simply inexcusable."
The problem is that Democrats can distance themselves from Hasan Piker. And there’s a reason why.

Fox News host Jesse Watters nailed the real reason Thursday on The Five, and it's a lot less comfortable for Democrats than "Republicans are trying to divide us." Piker isn't some fringe embarrassment the party can quietly disown. He's a mirror. "Hasan Piker is the Democrat base,” Watters said. “That's why they can't distance themselves from him."
Watters then ran down the list of positions Piker holds that just so happen to poll as mainstream inside the Democrat Party. "Hasan Piker's a socialist. A majority of Democrats love socialism," he said. He noted Piker's hostility toward Israel lines up with polling showing most Democrats view the country unfavorably, and that Piker's belief that America isn't a moral force for good tracks with where most Democrat voters already stand.
Watters also pointed out that Piker isn't radioactive to the party's rising stars. "Your two most popular people in the Democratic Party, AOC and Mamdani, are boys with Piker, they collaborate with the guy, they're friends, they're not disavowed," he said. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has said that if forced to choose between Piker and longtime strategist James Carville, he's with Piker.

Dingell can say she's "done" all she wants. Piker isn't a distraction Democrats can wish away days before an election. He's the id of their coalition (for those who are familiar with Freudian psychology), saying out loud what a huge chunk of their voters already quietly believe.
Democrats are running from Hasan Piker because they clearly got some internal polling showing that Piker is politically toxic in the general election, and they don’t want general election voters to know that Hasan Piker is their base.
