This Is What Happens When a Party Fears Its Own Voters

Two Massachusetts Democrats spent Thursday night in Boston clawing at each other over who is more devoted to trans ideology, and one of them ended up begging forgiveness on stage for something he said nearly two years ago. The other accused him of selling out children for political convenience. With the primary coming in just a couple of weeks and the polling showing exactly where the country stands on this issue, how far will Democrats go to prove their loyalty?

Soon after the 2024 election, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) said, "I have two little girls, I don't want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I'm supposed to be afraid to say that." The backlash from his own party was swift, and boy, did he cave fast. He even voted against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill that would have amended the Education Amendments of 1972 to make clear that Title IX defines sex by biology alone. He sold out his own daughters to protect his career, choosing the party line over his own flesh and blood.

In his final debate with Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) in the primary for Markey’s seat, Moulton was scrambling to position himself to Markey's left on trans issues. "Trans people are under assault by this administration across the country ... I want you to know that you belong, you matter, and I will have your back," he said. Then came the apology. "To anyone hurt by my comments, I'm sorry, because that was not my intention," Moulton said. "My intention was to say that we need to take on these issues ... not cede it to Republicans across the country."

Yet when a moderator asked him point-blank, "Yes or no, Congressman: do you think transgender athletes should be allowed to take part in girls' sports?" Moulton still couldn't give a straight answer. "I think they should, with a discussion about where we have issues of safety and fairness," he said.

Markey wasn't about to let him off the hook. "There's a reason why the Human Rights Campaign has endorsed me in this race ... it's because you threw those trans kids under the political bus, and you met with family members after you had made those very hurtful comments," he said.

Markey said Moulton didn't apologize to those families until shortly before the debate. "...it was only two weeks ago that you finally apologized. But that's almost two years later," he said. Moulton pushed back. "...I've made clear what I meant by my comments for a long time. And I am sorry if I hurt anyone, because that was not my intention," he said.

Watching two Democrats race to prove who loves trans ideology more is proof that Democrats aren’t moderating from their “woke 1.0” days like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) claims. Nope. They’re doubling down, and they’re doubling down despite the fact that this is a fringe issue.

The most recent Gallup survey on this issue found that 69% of Americans oppose letting men who "identify" as women compete in women's sports. The same poll found 69% believe trans athletes should compete only on teams matching their biological sex, not gender identity, and 66% say documents like passports and driver's licenses should reflect birth sex rather than gender identity.

"Each of these policies has broad support from about nine in 10 Republicans but only about four in 10 Democrats," Gallup explained. "A slim majority of Democrats (54%) believe people should be able to list their current gender identity on government documents, but fewer (45%) think transgender people should be able to play on sports teams that match their gender identity."

Trans ideology isn't mainstream, and the numbers prove it. But the Democrat Party is still all in. Say the wrong thing about girls' sports once, and you become the enemy, groveling for years while your rival weaponizes your own words. Democrats are literally fighting over who's more radical on trans ideology, long after the public already made up its mind on this issue.
