Voter ID might be the least controversial idea in American politics; when Republicans say this is basically an 80/20 issue, they are not exaggerating. Poll after poll after poll shows wide majorities of Republicans, Democrats, independents, whites, blacks, and Latinos on board with it. The only people who are unified against it are elected Democrats, be they in Washington, D.C. or in blue states nationwide. Why are they against it? Because the Democrat establishment knows something its own voters don't want to admit. The party needs the existing loopholes. Election integrity is a threat to the machine, and the machine protects itself.
If you want proof, look no further than California.
A May poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found that 71% of Californians want proof of citizenship required for first-time voter registration, and 54% want it required before every election. That's deep blue California.
State Assemblyman Carl DeMaio (R-75th District) launched an effort over a year ago to put voter ID on the ballot, and despite facing a heavily Democrat machine-run state, his team collected over a million signatures in just nine months. The measure qualified as Proposition 39.
All Prop 39 does is require voters to show a government-issued ID to vote in person, or write the last four digits of a designated ID number on a mail-in ballot. That number comes from a government ID already on file with the registrar, like a driver's license or passport. Election officials must also keep accurate voter rolls, verify citizenship attestations using government data, and report each county's verification rates every year, with the State Auditor checking compliance in odd-numbered years.

Remember when I said the Democrat establishment protects its own power? Well, on Sept. 19, 2025, Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office approved the measure's original ballot title, which read, "ESTABLISHES ADDITIONAL VOTER IDENTIFICATION AND CITIZENSHIP VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS." That's the title over a million Californians saw when they signed the petition. But then, on July 21, 2026, Bonta quietly rewrote it. The new title reads, "PROHIBITS CITIZENS FROM VOTING UNLESS THEY PRESENT GOVERNMENT-ISSUED IDENTIFICATION."
The first four words voters will see next to the measure on their ballots are "Prohibits citizens from voting."
DeMaio and his co-proponents filed a lawsuit, arguing that Bonta had already approved the original title and had no legitimate reason to change it. "Without this lawsuit, voters will see a BIASED and FALSE ballot title on Prop 39 that manipulates them into voting NO on Voter ID!" DeMaio said. He added, "Attorney General Rob Bonta is corruptly trying to rig the election against Prop 39 by falsely claiming it prohibits citizens from voting!" DeMaio argues the measure protects every citizen's vote by stopping non-citizen voting and fraudulently harvested ballots from canceling out legitimate ones.
That's how desperate establishment Democrats are to stop voter ID. Their own voters overwhelmingly want it. The polling is consistent. And still they'll lie, cheat, and abuse the power of public office to kill it, because they know exactly what happens to their power when elections get secure.
