A 25-year-old man with ties to Biden's White House has been charged with killing his girlfriend in their brand-new San Francisco apartment.

Nation Wood was arrested last week after his 22-year-old girlfriend, Samantha Emge, was shot and killed inside their Sunset District home on the night of March 24. Police arrived at 10:43 p.m. and found Emge suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Wood was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. According to Wood's attorney, the couple had just moved in together and had finished their very first meal in the home when the shooting occurred. Wood was allegedly dry-firing his weapon and didn't realize it was loaded. A bullet ripped through the wall and struck Emge while she showered. His attorney, Paula Canny, called it "such a random and horrible tragedy."

Emge had just graduated from San Francisco State University in 2025 with a degree in interior design and architecture. She had landed a job at an interior design studio in the city.

Homicide investigators on the case collected evidence against Wood and took him into custody for involuntary manslaughter. He was booked at San Francisco County Jail where he remained Friday.

Wood was a political science and government major at SFSU, graduating in May 2024, according to his LinkedIn account.

The alleged killer shared a photo showing him smiling with Harris and her husband, former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, in front of a presidential jet in 2024.

Wood grins in the photo with the VP and other dignitaries taken on a tarmac before a jet engine painted the distinctive blue of U.S. presidential airplanes.

“Very grateful to have had the opportunity to help the VP with her trip to APEC in San Francisco,” the post reads.

According to the New York Post, “Wood identified himself as a part-time security staffer who worked with Biden’s White House Secret Service team starting in November 2023 on his LinkedIn profile.” However, there is some dispute over his credentials.

Wood said on LinkedIn that he worked as advance security, providing “external advisory site security assessments for events with VIP attendance.”

“Experience includes site walkthroughs and advance coordination alongside U.S. Secret Service for senior government and high-net-worth principals,” his LinkedIn states.

A spokesman for the Secret Service said Wood was never an employee there.

After his arrest, Wood posted $300,000 bail — and things took another turn. He appeared in court via Zoom from a hospital mental health unit, where he had been admitted for a psychiatric evaluation. His attorney told the court plainly, "We don't want to further compound this horrible tragedy by him ending his own life — which is what I think he wants to do now." Wood was released on electronic monitoring, with no weapons allowed and required cooperation with pre-trial services.

"Given the charge of involuntary manslaughter and given the fact that at this time this a very fresh investigation into the facts. The only information that we have is that this conduct or the death was not intentional and I'm not surprised that he was released," San Francisco's District Attorney Brooke Jenkins told ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
