Can Democrats Stop Pretending to Care About Unity?

Senate Television via AP

There’s a certain kind of political theater so transparently calculated and insulting. Democrats have spent years perfecting one particular performance: the unity speech. It shows up like clockwork, dripping with concern for a divided nation, wrapped in soaring language about lifting up all people. And every time, it means absolutely nothing. And lately, the gap between rhetoric and reality has gotten so wide it raises an obvious question: who do they think they’re fooling?

Seriously, I really hate it when Democrats pretend to care about unity, as if it’s some deeply held value they hold.

It’s not.

You can see that in how they govern. This is the same party obstructing the SAVE America Act, a bill with overwhelming public support. The same party that has spent weeks blocking funding for the Department of Homeland Security because they oppose immigration enforcement. And, of course, the same party that reflexively opposes anything President Trump does simply because it’s Trump doing it.

And, you know, all the comparing Trump to Hitler and stuff.

So why keep up the “unity” façade?

The answer isn’t complicated. It’s about positioning. Calling for unity sounds great, especially for independents who decide national elections. When Democrats start talking about healing divisions and bringing people together, they’re not laying out a governing philosophy. They’re testing campaign messaging.

And Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) came in right on cue. New book. A book tour and a focus group-tested message.

ICYMI: Democrats Should Be Panicking About This

On Sunday, Booker made an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press and declared, “As a whole, our party has failed this moment.” He also pushed for what he called “generational renewal,” warning that “this left-right divide is killing our country and our adversaries know it.”

It sounds noble. It even sounds urgent. But take a closer look at what he’s actually saying, and the whole thing unravels.

Booker complains about division yet frames the problem as an internal Democratic Party struggle. He criticizes “purity tests” and calls for new leadership, while younger Democrats attack Chuck Schumer for being “too moderate.”

Remember, Schumer’s big offense was helping avoid a government shutdown last year, and for that, he’s been treated like a traitor.

So, let’s not pretend that Booker is calling for unity between the left and the right. He’s calling for unity on the left. More specifically, he’s pushing for ideological conformity so Democrats can more effectively oppose Donald Trump. That’s what “generational renewal” really means here. It’s not about bridging divides across the country. It’s about consolidating power within his own party.

And let’s be honest, there isn’t much room left for Democrats to become more ideologically unified. A recent study found that “in today’s America, the right is where ideological diversity lives. … The left’s increasing intolerance for internal debate creates a climate inhospitable to personal autonomy, especially for those who think deeply or live unconventionally.”

To that point, when has Booker demonstrated he’s capable of taking a position that wasn’t approved by the radical left? Yet, he argues that “Americans want a new generation of leaders that show that they can lift the whole country up,” and adds, “It is time for a new vision of our country that is far more unifying that brings people together, doesn’t deepen divides.”

Spare me.

If Democrats truly cared about unity, they wouldn’t be sabotaging widely supported legislation. They wouldn’t be playing political games with national security funding. And they certainly wouldn’t treat compromise within their own ranks as a punishable offense.

What we’re seeing from Booker is something much simpler: the early stages of a 2028 presidential run. The language, the tone, the carefully crafted concern about division—it all fits the script. Unity isn’t the goal. It’s the brand.

And that’s why it rings so hollow.
