The Important Lesson of the Democrats’ DHS Shutdown

Senate Democrats finally caved this morning on funding DHS, and while there’s some drama in the House right now, there’s a huge lesson to be learned from this situation. I’m sure this will get resolved soon enough, but the real story isn’t the outcome—it’s the standoff itself, and what it says about the Democratic Party. When a political party toys with national security to score points, you have to ask: what would they do if no one stopped them?

On Hannity Thursday evening, White House advisor Stephen Miller didn’t hold back about what was at stake. Even though Senate Democrats ultimately caved, Miller made clear the episode revealed something deeper and far more troubling about the modern Democratic Party.

“God help us if they ever got back in power, Sean,” Miller said. “Look, under Joe Biden, we know they let in 20 million illegal aliens. Sex trafficking, labor trafficking, human trafficking, drug dealing, cartel slayings, one atrocity, one horror show after another. Now here they are trying to end the Department of Homeland Security, trying to disable the heroes who keep us safe each and every day.”

Exactly.

Democrats were willing to hold the Department of Homeland Security hostage during a time when border security and internal threats remain front and center for millions of Americans. That’s not some obscure bureaucratic agency. DHS sits at the heart of the country’s defense against terrorism, trafficking, and cross-border crime.

Miller went on to remind viewers why the department exists in the first place, and why playing political games with it crosses a line that should never be crossed, no matter how much you want to pander to your radical base.

“Remember, this department, Sean, was created after 9/11,” he said. “It was created to ensure that foreign nationals could not enter this country and kill Americans. And now this party, the Democratic Party, they're at war with the heroes trying to keep the terrorists from killing our loved ones. That's what we're up against.”

And Miller didn’t stop there. He connected the dots to another issue Democrats continue to resist: basic election safeguards.

“And to your point about voter ID, why would a political party refuse to support proof of citizenship, refuse to support voter ID when you brought in all these illegal aliens unless you were trying to ensure that illegal aliens could vote and tilt the balance of power?” he asked.

Great point. Remember, a sizable majority of Americans, including Democrats, black, and Hispanic voters, support voter ID and proving citizenship to vote. The only people who are so rabidly against these are Democrats in Congress.

“This strikes at the very heart of our democracy,” he said. “This is about whether or not democracy as we know it survives in America.”

If there’s anything we’ve learned from this standoff, it’s that Democrats are willing to put the safety and security of Americans at risk just to make a political statement. We should never forget that.
