Democrat Gaslighting Hits Peak Absurdity Over DHS Funding

After weeks of holding funding for the Department of Homeland Security hostage — leaving TSA workers unpaid, the Coast Guard underfunded, and FEMA strapped — Democrats finally caved in the early hours of Friday morning. What has been happening since is one of the most brazen gaslighting operations in recent political memory.

There’s no question that Democrats caved. They’ve been voting against funding DHS for six weeks, causing all sorts of problems at airports and, of course, putting our country at risk in the middle of an international conflict. Democrats were refusing to fund the department because they wanted a whole bunch of reforms that would have essentially kneecapped ICE.

But none of those demands were in the deal. Democrats got nothing. Zero. They held workers hostage for weeks, demanded concessions, received none, and then signed off on a bill that gave them exactly what Republicans were offering from the start.

"They got no reforms on DHS, which they could have had if they had been willing to work with us a little bit on that,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said.

Democrats were so committed to performative resistance that they walked away from a deal that might have actually given them something. Instead, they walk away from this deal with zilch.

Democrats are pushing a different narrative entirely.

"Last night, Senate Republicans caved to Democrats, passing a bill to end the Republican TSA shutdown WITHOUT funding for ICE. We have been clear: No blank check for ICE. This bill now heads to the House,” the Democrats' official X account posted.

"No blank check for ICE,” DNC Chairman Ken Martin wrote. “Republicans caved. Democrats held the line."

Chuck Schumer went even further. "Senate Democrats were clear: no blank check for a lawless ICE and Border Patrol," he declared. "Democrats held firm in our opposition that Donald Trump's rogue and deadly militia should not get more funding without serious reforms... I'm very proud of our Democratic caucus. Through it all, Senate Democrats stood united — no wavering, no backing down. We held the line."

They didn’t hold any line. ICE is already fully funded through 2029. Democrats weren't blocking new ICE money. The entire point of this shutdown was to force Republicans to impose reforms on ICE that would have made immigration enforcement nearly impossible. In the end, the only things they ended up blocking were TSA workers’ paychecks, Coast Guard operations, and FEMA resources… the only logical conclusion I can come to is that polling showed them it was hurting them, and they needed an excuse to flip-flop.

And it's no coincidence the deal came together right after President Donald Trump announced he would sign an executive order to restart TSA pay immediately, tapping leftover funds from last summer's One Big Beautiful Bill Act earmarked for DHS. Once Trump made clear he had a workaround in his back pocket, the Democrats' leverage evaporated overnight.

Honestly, this was inevitable. For days, it was clear that Democrats were desperate to reach a deal but couldn't figure out how to do it without looking like they were abandoning their base's demands. It’s clear from their current messaging that they’re leaning on this "no blank check for ICE" slogan as a desperate way to reframe total capitulation as principled resistance.
