Patrick Clancy came home from errands one day to find his world shattered. His wife Lindsay had tried to commit suicide after strangling their children to death. His youngest baby survived for a few more days before dying in his arms, even after Patrick begged God to leave him “just... one" kid. Now millions of crazy people are demonizing Patrick.
But out of the hellish nightmare he went through, Patrick did find one woman who understood him enough to become his second wife, and they are going to have a baby, CBS correspondent Ross Douthat said after talking with the couple. And yes, I am happy about this.
Everything about the Lindsay Clancy case has been horrible, from the way she killed her children to her lack of remorse to her millions of deranged supporters to the 11 pro-murder jurors. But finally, there is one piece of positive news connected with it.

Patrick told 60 Minutes that he still talks to Cora, Dawson, and Callan all the time, and of course he will never stop grieving them. But perhaps he can heal a little through building a second family.

I immediately thought of the Bible, the book of Genesis, which has the history of the brothers Cain the impious and Abel the just (Genesis 4). Cain, angry that God was more pleased with Abel's humble offering, "rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him." When God asked Cain where Abel was, Cain heartlessly answered, "I know not: am I my brother's keeper?" But God the all-seeing told Cain he was cursed because Abel's "blood crieth to me from the earth." Then, Cain begged God not to let anyone kill him. Like Lindsay, Cain first tried to act as if he did not have responsibility for his crime and then tried to frame himself as a victim.
The Bible does not describe what Adam and Eve felt or said when they discovered their son had murdered their other son. But it does, in Genesis 4:25, tell us how God offered them consolation: "Adam also knew his wife again: and she brought forth a son, and called his name Seth, saying: God hath given me another seed, for Abel whom Cain slew." God Himself knew that the best way to help Adam and Eve heal was to give them another child, just as God is reportedly giving Patrick Clancy another child.
In short, I think all of us should rejoice with Patrick and Rachel Clancy on their soon-to-be-born child, just as I hope all of us sympathized with him during the trial. He has experienced unimaginable loss in his life. He is still the target of a horrific hate campaign. But he finally has a reason to hope again. And I'm sure that Cora, Dawson, and Callan would be happy to know that they have a sibling on the way.
