Yes, leftists really believe that so-called hate speech is not free speech, and therefore that they can simultaneously frame themselves as champions of free speech while aggressively shutting down anything with which they disagree. And no amount of logic is going to penetrate this delusion.
Among the reasons that leftists are so successful at brainwashing people, even though their policies always lead to disaster, is that they believe the tenets of their ideology with a blind and cult-like faith, and they appeal to the worst vices and weaknesses of human nature. Thus, an individual can viciously insult, smear, and even assault his political opponents or social rivals even while claiming he is a compassionate freedom lover, because he supports exposing kids to sexually explicit content.
It’s the opposite of the Judeo-Christian ethic, which emphasizes that public virtue begins with private and internal sanctity. Leftists teach that one could be corrupt, selfish, irrational, and violent, and yet still be “virtuous” simply because of what one says and whom one attacks. So George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are villains because they did not perfectly match 21st-century Communist ideals, even though they were men of great integrity. But Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Bill Clinton are idolized because they promoted abortion, DEI, and welfare.

The reason I bring this topic up is that Davidson College in North Carolina is set to receive about $4 million in federal funding to train other institutions of higher learning in civil discourse. The problem is that the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) gave Davidson a D-minus free speech rating this year. Campus Reform is deeply concerned that taxpayer money is going to waste on a college that sabotages free speech on its campus, and therefore will certainly not appropriately train other colleges.
Davidson also ranked 198th out of 257 schools in students’ comfort expressing ideas and 138th in political tolerance, according to FIRE… According to FIRE, Davidson administrators charged members of the conservative student organization [Young Americans for Freedom] with harassment after they distributed pro-Israel pamphlets on campus.
Obviously, the Trump administration should reconsider this funding. The problem is that from the leftist academics’ point of view, there is no contradiction between allowing antisemitic or anti-conservative harassment and blathering about free speech. For them, free speech is assaulting Jews, attacking conservatives, rioting in support of illegal aliens and Islamic terrorists, putting porn in schools, and calling for the assassination of Republican leaders. Also for them, saying that there are only two sexes, that criminals should always face the consequences of their actions, and that Islam is an evil religion are all hate speech and therefore deserving of punishment.

People who are not part of the leftist cult always have a hard time understanding why leftists make such completely contradictory statements. But it all depends on how you define the terms that you use. If violence is free speech and differing opinions are hate speech, there is no contradiction in the leftists’ actions. Since they do not bother to conform any of their beliefs or actions to reality, they simply define words however they wish in order to justify their own actions and statements. Academics are particularly talented at this Marxist exercise.
No federal funding should go to any college incapable of honesty and tolerance for constitutional rights.
