Kids who are homeschooled, across ethnic groups and socioeconomic backgrounds have consistently scored higher for years on standardized tests than public school students. Leftist teachers and unions hate homeschooling so much, because it exposes the fact that certifications, activism, and taxpayer funding are not even half as educationally effective as invested parents and high personal standards.
I should probably admit upfront that I am naturally biased in favor of homeschooling, since my parents (mainly my mother) homeschooled me from kindergarten through 12th grade. My mother was a certified teacher before she started homeschooling, but I know plenty of parents who were not certified teachers and still managed to educate their children well. As with anything, there are always people who do it poorly, but homeschooling overall in my experience produces young people with better work ethics, more skills, a greater breadth of knowledge, higher college grades, and healthier relationships.
You know who hates homeschooling? Woke educators. American Federation of Teachers union boss Randi Weingarten — you know, the one who hypocritically wanted to keep schools closed so you had to homeschool during the COVID lockdowns — once shared an article acknowledging that many parents see homeschooling as providing individualized benefits, but also repeating many old and debunked accusations about a lack of socialization and missing out on undefined classroom benefits.
A 2025 study by college researchers bashed homeschooling as “a political practice.” Georgetown Law School professor Robin L. West railed in 2015 “that homeschooled children grow up to become right-wing political ‘soldiers,’ eager to ‘undermine, limit, or destroy state functions.’” In states with school choice, which can sometimes be applied to homeschooling, public school teachers always condemn school choice vouchers.
All this hatred of homeschooling does not come from demonstrable harms caused by this form of education, but precisely because it is actually way more effective than the expensive cesspool that our public education system has become. You can watch the White House video below of a couple highlights on how abysmal most American students’ reading and math skills are now.

A May study from the Peabody Journal of Education found that homeschoolers “scored roughly 0.75 to 1 standard deviation above the national average of institutional school students in all five areas tested: reading, language, math, social studies, and science.” Other studies show the gap to be even greater.
An August 2026 comparison between public school and homeschool published on Numa noted that while homeschool families spent $500-$2,500 per kid per year, the cost of a public school student on average is $17,280, and that’s taxpayer money. It also stated that peer-reviewed studies found that homeschoolers actually have comparable or even better socialization than public schoolers. And it also noted that homeschoolers typically score 15 to 25 percentile points higher on standardized tests.
One statistic that I found particularly interesting when I was researching this piece was from the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), which stated that a “2015 study found Black homeschool students to be scoring 23 to 42 percentile points above Black public school students.” Leftists are always screaming that black and brown students absolutely cannot achieve high grades because America is so racist. In reality, it is simply because public schools are failing black and brown students.
Speaking of NHERI, that group has new research that it discussed on a podcast with Nicki Truesdell, again illustrating that available standardized testing data consistently shows homeschooled kids, across demographics, to be way ahead of their public school peers. Check out a few of the statistical highlights below:

Weingarten and her ilk are not opposed to homeschooling because it destroys kids’ futures. They are opposed to homeschooling because it exposes the lie that prioritizing certifications, political activism, woke ideology, low standards, DEI, CRT, and ever-increasing taxpayer funding is effective.
