Trojan Horses, the SPLC, and the Charlottesville Race Hoax

Beware of race-baiters bearing gifts. The latest development in the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) scandal illustrates just how committed the woke group was to manufacturing the alleged white supremacy it made huge profits from condemning.

The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) indicted the SPLC for fraud over its secretive payments to members and leaders of extremist and white supremacist groups, including the KKK, the Aryan Nations, and American Front. The latest, published on Fox News, is that the SPLC was funding and fueling white supremacist hate from the 1980s onwards, and that one of their paid informants planned and coordinated the infamous 2017 "Unite the Right" rally that Democrats used for years to claim that Donald Trump and his supporters were racist. To top it off, SPLC's fundraising took off after that rally. Talk about a Trojan Horse — the SPLC spent years building up the very movement on which it has, in recent years, made such political and financial capital slamming.

The Greek City Times names April 24 as the anniversary of the 12th-century B.C. fall and sack of Troy. Whether that date is perfectly accurate or not, the event was a significant one, a defining moment in Western Civilization. Archeological research supports the tale of Troy's sack, and legend tells us that the Greeks did it by treacherously hiding inside a huge wooden horse, which some of the gods tricked the Trojans into seeing as a gift. In the night, when the horse was inside Troy's walls, the Greeks crawled out and began a wholesale slaughter. The concept of a Trojan Horse as a seemingly positive gift that hides a sinister and destructive secret has passed into a common colloquialism. Indeed, we might apply it to the SPLC's scandal.

The DOJ identified one SPLC stooge, "F-37," who was a member of the "online leadership chat group that planned" the "Unite the Right" event. F-37 then "attended the event at the direction of the SPLC. F-37 made racist postings under the supervision of the SPLC and helped coordinate transportation to the event for several attendees," the DOJ continued. "Between 2015 and 2023, the SPLC secretly paid F-37 more than $270,000."

The SPLC asserted to Fox News that it only paid members of extremist groups to "save[ ] lives," but all the evidence indicates the sources deliberately fueled violence rather than checking it. Also, significantly, the SPLC's revenue surged right after the Charlottesville, Va., rally that F-37 helped plan. As I said earlier this week, there wasn't enough white supremacy going around to suit the SPLC's insidious goals, so it manufactured some and boosted its business.

In short, the SPLC is a Trojan Horse, with a veneer of self-righteousness and talking points about "fighting hate." But underneath, they are nothing more than crooked liars and scammers who are deliberately creating a cycle of violence that benefits them. The SPLC's role in smearing Charlie Kirk as a dangerous white supremacist was so egregious that the FBI cut ties with the organization after Kirk's assassination. But for some time, the FBI had partnered with and relied on information from the SPLC. The damage it had already done was incalculable.

It should have been obvious that the SPLC was thoroughly hypocritical because its rhetoric was more extreme and dishonest than the rhetoric of those it criticized. The SPLC labeled any religious or conservative organization that disputed leftist talking points as "hateful." The corruption is more complex and deep than we realized, but the obvious disingenuousness was always there, as was the possibility of them offering bribes to activists.

Or, to repurpose a line from Vergil's Aeneid, I fear radical leftists — especially those bearing gifts.
