Hypocrisy: East Villagers Voted Mamdani. Then Mamdani Moves Homeless Shelter to Their Neighborhood.

The NYC neighborhood, the East Village, went overwhelmingly for socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the 2025 New York mayoral election. Now, people from that same neighborhood are suing Commie Mamdani as his New York City administration is planning to relocate an infamous homeless shelter to the Manhattan enclave.

Like the Hollywood celebrities who broke the restrictions of the COVID-19 lockdowns while demanding that everyone else follow them, or like the Martha’s Vineyard residents who were outraged when Republicans sent a few dozen illegal aliens to their neighborhood during the Biden border crisis, the East Villagers want to be insulated from the consequences of their own election decisions.

Over 50% of the Manhattan neighborhood, the East Village, voted for radical Commie Zohran Mamdani in the 2025 NYC mayoral election, based on information from the New York Post. A deep dive into the interactive map that breaks down the vote by neighborhood indicates that 70% of the East Villagers voted for Mamdani, 26% voted for his fellow Democrat Andrew Cuomo, and fewer than 4% voted for the Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa. In short, the East Village is an intense hotspot of Democrat fervor, particularly socialist fervor. At least, they thought they supported socialism until it turned out that socialism meant a sketchy homeless shelter in their exclusive neighborhood.

The New York Post reported April 21:

The lawsuit filed Monday seeks an emergency restraining order that would prevent the “rushed” May 1 opening of the intake shelter along Third Street.

The site was selected by City Hall as one of two intake shelters in Manhattan that would effectively replace the notorious Bellevue homeless shelter — a haven for often-dangerous vagrants that Mamdani plans to close by the end of the month.

But Mamdani and city officials not only underhandedly declared an “emergency” to close the Midtown shelter, their decision to plunk its clientele into the East Village was dangerously slapdash, the lawsuit contends.

No doubt, but voting for a socialist mayor was dangerously slapdash, also. The issue with rich leftists is that they love the virtue-signaling of voting for commie politicians who will impose high taxes on them to provide ever-expanding welfare for less financially successful people, but hate when some of those very “underprivileged” people move into their neighborhood.

It is discouraging how many times I have received lectures on the compassion of open borders from wealthy people who live in exclusive, gated communities, where the only immigrants they will ever meet are perhaps the landscapers whom they pay under the table. Similarly, pro-abortion Democrats who talk about the importance of cutting the global population will lavish luxuries on their own children.

The East Villagers suing Mamdani is just one more example of people who imposed catastrophe on their city, and then were furious that the catastrophe encompassed even their own elite selves.
