St. Joseph, Honorable Work, and Lefties Who Despise American Workers

America once stood out from other countries as a place where work was seen not as demeaning but as honorable and laudable — a Biblical view. But as Democrats increasingly transform our republic into an oligarchy, their disdain for workers grows ever more entrenched in our society.

Today in the Catholic Church is the feast of Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and husband of Mary, who was present at the birth of Christ and all the important events of the Messiah’s infancy and childhood. Jesus grew up with Joseph, working with him in the carpenter’s shop and, according to tradition, sitting beside him as he died. What greater honor could there be for a man than to be responsible for the Messiah and His mother? One aspect of Joseph’s life that the Church has long emphasized is his role as a manual laborer, making him the patron saint of workers.

I was thinking about this today in particular because the debate is still raging between Democrats and Republicans about funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes not only Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) but the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), among other subsidiary agencies. Most of those people have gone without pay for weeks as Democrats stubbornly hold up funding over their desire to protect illegal alien criminals.

Or, in other words, the Democrats are once again giving us a sample of their total disdain for American workers. Nor is it isolated to this DHS funding debate.

In fact, the Democrats’ dedication to illegal immigration is all about prioritizing cheap foreign labor over American labor. I have discussed before the fact that many Americans in industries such as construction, factories, trucking, and food service have a hard time finding or keeping jobs simply because companies prefer to hire illegal aliens. It is much cheaper and the aliens will put up with much worse working conditions.

In a sense, illegal immigration was the Democrats’ solution to losing their slaves. It is just as true in the 21st century as in the 19th century that Democrats prioritize their own profits and power over paying and treating their workers properly. Democrats even make many of the same arguments about illegal immigration as they did about slavery, framing it as economically necessary.

But Democrats also hurt American workers with their socialist welfare programs that encourage large numbers of leeches on the taxpayer dime, their inflationary policies, and their onerous government regulation. Welfare has become generational, allowing people to grow obese and have no jobs for their entire lives while they live off money confiscated from job-holders. And Democrats are completely opposed to welfare reform.

Furthermore, Auburn University estimated in 2017 that each federal government regulator costs the economy 138 jobs a year. In California, Chevron is warning that Democrats’ proposed woke climate alarmist regulations are likely to cost half a million jobs in the petroleum industry.

In short, Democrats have the total opposite of the biblical view on work. Jesus, like his foster-father Joseph, was a manual laborer who spent most of his time among other laborers. That is the attitude which America should adopt once again.
