Archiving the “strange death of Europe,” as Douglas Murray put it, and the West more broadly, at the hands of the neoliberal technocracy.

‘We wuz Indianz’

You, as an ignorant bigot inhabiting flyover country, the Land of the Deplorables, might not be aware that, according to many urban scholars, Africans and peoples of African descent across the global diaspora were actually the original:

  • Hebrews
  • Egyptians
  • Japanese
  • Chinese
  • Native Americans
  • Basically anyone who ever achieved anything they would like to claim as their own to remedy their inferiority complex

Hence one of the most longstanding, and deservedly so, internet memes, “We Wuz Kangz.”

Whatever other transgressions one might accuse urban scholars with an interest in the esoteric of, a lack of imagination isn’t one of them.

As (former) MSNBC Race Lady Joy Reid explains, the white man (literal Satan) “can't originally invent anything” and instead stole everything of cultural value from the black man.

In that vein, it was with equal parts shame and nostalgia that I watched this video filmed in the county in which I attended public high school, Cobb County, just to the northwest of Atlanta proper, featuring what is clearly and indisputably an African-American gentleman in a full face of war paint, the artisanal moccasins, and the feather hat introducing himself and his “people” to the attendees at an October 27 Georgia Board of Commissioners meeting.

Via AhíTvlâōfoh Yamassee–Guale Nation of Georgia (emphasis added):

The AhíTvlâōfoh Yamassee–Guale Nation of Georgia is a living Indigenous community whose people trace their lineage to the Yamassee and Guale nations of the Southeastern Woodlands. Our ancestors occupied and moved throughout what is now Georgia, South Carolina, and northern Florida. Lands shaped by river systems, trade routes, diplomacy, resistance, and survival.

We are not a people of the past. We are a people who endured.

Colonial expansion, forced displacement, warfare, and political erasure fractured many Southeastern tribes. Some were removed, some were absorbed, and others survived by adapting, blending into surrounding communities, quietly maintaining kinship ties, and carrying culture forward within families rather than institutions. The Yamassee–Guale story is one of resilience through concealment, continuity through community, and survival in plain sight.

Today, our tribal headquarters are located in the Metro-Atlanta area*, where we actively participate in Indigenous events, cultural education, and community engagement. Our work is guided by a commitment to self-sustainability, integrity, and pride in our heritage. We seek to strengthen our people internally while fostering respectful relationships with neighboring communities, local governments, and other Indigenous nations.

*Nothing screams “indigenous living” like the Metro Atlanta area.

Does this obviously African-American gentleman have some sprinkling of “AhíTvlâōfoh Yamassee–Guale Nation” in his genome, to the extent such a people ever existed?

It’s possible; most people in North America with any amount of historical roots in the land have some Native American blood.

In any event, this guy is not an Indian, and no one can make me refer to him as such.

While wearing feathers on your head and bestowing upon your cousin the name of “Fighting Bear” might seem like an instance of the grave Social Justice™ crime of cultural appropriation, rest assured that Persons of Color™ have generously exempted themselves from culpability for all crimes, real or imagined.
