Archiving the “strange death of Europe,” as Douglas Murray put it, and the West more broadly, at the hands of the neoliberal technocracy.

UK: Migrant households claim record welfare handouts

The migrants’ eagerness to gobble up as much public subsidy as possible — which they are obviously owed because of colonialism or slavery or something — combined with the government’s suicidal eagerness to give it to them, conspired to produce a record-breaking 12 billion pounds of universal credit payments to the Diversity™ people in 2025, according to recently released government data.

“Households with migrants claimed a record £11.9bn in universal credit payments last year, figures show. The amount of universal credit claimed by households with at least one foreign national rose by a quarter from 2024 to 2025, data from the Department for Work and Pensions shows,” reports LBC. “Almost £12bn in universal credit was paid out to such claimants last year, up from up from £9.5bn in 2024.”

The kicker: “65 per cent – or £7.7bn –of payments were made to unemployed claimants.”

Color me shocked!

The real red-pill moment for me on the welfare state and its functional limitations to simultaneously improve society while not destroying the economy came from a conversation I had in sophomore year of college with an unreformed felon out on parole called Tyrone who, for reasons that would take entirely too much time to explain, lived on the couch in the living room of my apartment for a season — a conversation I documented in great detail in my groundbreaking expat travel guide and existential treatise, Broken English Teacher: Notes From Exile, available wherever fine literature is sold, but mostly on Amazon:

Several times throughout our cohabitation, Tyrone was interviewed in our apartment by a representative of the Georgia Department of Human Services, Division of Family and Children Services in connection with some children he had fathered. I never had the pleasure of meeting his offspring. I could usually guess when one of the government lady's visits was impending because those were the only times Tyrone wore a collared shirt — or any shirt at all, actually…

During one of their meetings, I stepped out onto the porch to smoke a cigarette. I saw the Family Services lady — a late twenty-something with a permanent look of some combination of the frazzled exasperation of an activist with a righteous cause and the gloomy despair of the jaded idealist — walk out of the door and enter her Honda Civic. Just as I was contemplating how little faith in the human race I would be able to muster up the ability to pretend to have after a just a few weeks with her job, right on cue the epitome of the source of that despair appeared on the porch.

"Aye, dawg, you got a cigarette?"

I gave him a cigarette and he lit it with a lighter he produced from his pocket. Tyrone always kept a lighter in his possession, presumably for convenience, in the event he stumbled upon someone else's possessions he would be interested in smoking, as often happened.

"Aye, I’ma move to Germany, man," he said through a cloud of exhaled smoke.

"Germany? Why’s that?"

"'Cause in Germany they take care of you, dawg. They give you s**t."

Apparently Tyrone had been reading up on comparative politics and public policy, and after carefully considering the benefits and drawbacks of a pure laissez-faire free market economic system versus a more socially-equitable approach to resource distribution, had come to the ideological conclusion that he liked getting free s**t.

As he smoked the thousandth cigarette I had given him, I diplomatically relayed to Tyrone my personal belief that the only reason Germany wasn’t a Third World country was because people like him didn’t live there, but he didn’t really catch my drift.

Welfare states can only possibly work in a high-trust society in which a strong sense of nationhood and decency prevent, barring the handful of sociopaths and leeches that inevitably exist in any society, rampant abuse of the system.
