‘True Patriots’
In a brave and stunning publicly funded live-action retelling of American history called “True Patriots,” African-American slaves during the American Revolution are recast as the titular “true patriots,” in contrast to “so-called” national heroes like George Washington.

In the play, liberated slave spirits in heaven are granted decision-making authority to decide whether various “so-called great” patriarchs of American founding mythology, like George Washington, will be allowed into paradise despite their myriad crimes against humanity and their intolerable whiteness.

So goes a scene from Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience, a new historical fiction play and musical by the South Carolina-based non-profit Gullah Kinfolk Traveling Theater Inc. The performance retells the American revolution from the Gullah Geechee perspective, the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans in the south-east US.

“Behind every great man is a great woman,” Singleton-Prather said, “but behind every so-called great American revolutionary war hero, there’s some Africans somewhere.”…
Da’ Gullah American Revolutionary Experience allowed Singleton-Prather to hold the US accountable for its past wrongdoings, she said, while celebrating the resilience of marginalized communities. “When I look at the true patriots of the American revolutionary war, it’s not George Washington, it’s not Francis Marion.” Singleton-Prather said.
“It’s those Blacks and Native Americans that fought for freedom knowing that they themselves would be denied. They are the true patriots.”

Wearing a hat that reads “Black Americans vs. Everybody” — just in case her ideology weren’t apparent enough based on her speech — and sporting ornate, comically supersized yellow acrylic nails, this woman reveals the esoteric history of the Americas, conspiratorially hidden by some cabal of presumably white devils in order to keep the proud peoples of Africa from discovering the truth:

So in school they told us about seven nations that came to America to conquer the land. But they told us that the people who were here were Native American. What does that do mentally? It mentally takes us out of the story…
The reason why they told you that it was Native Americans who were here is so that you won’t know that you were already here.

The sheer confidence, condescension, and volume with which these people — liberated from any sense of self-reflection, critical analysis, or shame — can proclaim prima facie nonsense is actually a superpower of sorts.
I stand forever in awe — and, frankly, with a tinge of jealousy — of the audacity.
