Thousands of proudly defiant lesbians and queer women took to San Francisco’s streets Saturday afternoon for the Dyke March, their mission of visibility and protest taking on renewed resonance amid a national backlash against LGBTQ+ rights.
The annual march, which kicked off after its traditional, celebratory rally in Dolores Park and wound through the Castro neighborhood under the evening sun, has long distinguished itself from San Francisco’s larger Pride festivities by rejecting corporate sponsorship, permits and floats in favor of a grassroots demonstration.
That ethos — rooted in an effort to center those historically sidelined within both society and the larger queer movement — has taken on fresh significance as attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, particularly those targeting transgender people, have intensified across the country.
By 3:30 p.m., the smell of hot dogs served alongside tequila shots filled the air and every patch of grass in Dolores Park had been spoken for. Towels, picnic blankets and umbrellas stretched across the hillside as thousands settled in to celebrate, protest and wait for the Dyke March to begin.
Though the march was born as an act of political protest, Saturday’s gathering felt as much like a festival as a demonstration, with dancing and DJ sets.

- Why are the marching lesbians proud of their sexual attraction to other women?

- Whom exactly are they “defying” in San Francisco with their public displays of lesbianism?
These people get permits to parade through the streets like a conquering army, sponsored by every Fortune 500 corporation under the sun and attended by virtually every local politician, as a show of their cultural hegemony.
They get special legal protections.
They get hired and promoted on the basis of their sexual orientation.
They get special state-run hotlines to call when they’ve been misgendered.

Who is it that they’re defying?
At the New York Dyke March, several individuals who appear not to be legacy women but are ostensibly lesbians somehow sang “God is a Lesbian, God is a Dyke” with references to homosexual sex acts too explicit to reprint here.

Real-life lesbians, one of many of life’s disappointments, it’s been said many times, many ways, almost never resemble the fantastical products of a young heterosexual man’s vivid imagination.
In reality, lesbians, at least the ones who turn out for marches, tend to be portly, masked for COVID, and waving banners in the tranny color theme with overlaid text reading “Fight Against War, Transphobia, and Capitalism For a Socialist World.”
